What do the changes in Minimum wages for award-free and award-covered employees mean for your business?

The Fair Work Commission recently announced an increase to Australia’s minimum wages for award-covered and award-free employees.

There is an increase of 3.75% that will be effective from 1 July 2024.

For employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement, the national minimum wage will apply. This has been increased to 24.10 per hour (915.90 per week).

For award-covered employees, the new minimum wage set out by the Fair Work Commission will apply

For employees covered by an agreement, the rates and conditions of the agreement will be upheld if the rates set out in the agreement are higher or by those of the award.
Should the current wage be lower than the new wage set out in the award, employers will have to increase their wages to match the new minimum wage.

What are Modern awards?
These are legal documents that outline minimum pay rates and conditions of employment covering most industries and sectors.

What are Enterprise agreements?
These are specific contracts between the employees and the enterprise (employer) that also set out terms and conditions of employment and can be tailored to meet specific requirements. However, the agreements still need to follow the minimum standards of wages, leave, work hours and overtime. This is done to protect the employees.
