As of February 2025, it has been six months since the August 2024 amendments to casual employment laws under the Fair Work Act, introducing stricter guidelines on the distribution of the Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS).

Understanding the CEIS

The CEIS serves to inform casual employees of their rights, particularly regarding conversion to permanent employment. The August 2024 revisions mandate more frequent distribution to ensure transparency and employee awareness.

Employer Responsibilities at the Six-Month Milestone

Employers with 15 or more employees must provide the CEIS:

  • At the commencement of employment.
  • At six months of employment.
  • At 12 months, followed by annual distribution.

For small businesses (fewer than 15 employees), the requirements remain:

  • At the start of employment.
  • Again at the 12-month mark.

Businesses employing casual staff before August 2024 must now ensure they receive their second CEIS notification. Failure to comply may lead to penalties under Fair Work regulations.

CEIS distribution methods include in-person handover, email, mail, fax, or an intranet link. While flexibility exists, employers must provide clear confirmation that employees have been prompted to review the document.
