What Does This Mean for Employers?

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) labour force data shows the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.4% in June 2026, signalling that the labour market continues to be resilient despite ongoing economic pressures.

While unemployment remained unchanged, employment increased by 76,000 jobs, with much of the growth driven by part-time employment. Workforce participation also rose to 67.0%, indicating more Australians are entering or returning to the labour market.

What does this mean for employers?

Although the labour market has shown signs of easing compared to recent years, competition for skilled employees remains strong. Many industries continue to experience recruitment challenges, particularly for specialist and experienced roles.

The increase in workforce participation is encouraging and may provide employers with a broader talent pool. However, organisations should not assume recruitment will become significantly easier.

Employers who offer competitive remuneration, flexible working arrangements, career development opportunities and positive workplace cultures will continue to be best positioned to attract and retain high-quality employees.

Key takeaways
  • Unemployment remains low at 4.4%, indicating ongoing demand for workers.
  • Employment continues to grow, particularly in part-time roles.
  • Workforce participation has increased, bringing more people into the labour market.
  • Competition for skilled talent is expected to remain strong.
